Santorum’s desert visit results in few local donations

When Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum quietly campaigned in the desert last month, it doesn’t appear he was courting many local donors.

During the entire month of February, the former senator from Pennsylvania received $6,675 in itemized donations from people with a Coachella Valley address, according to fundraising reports filed this week.

Santorum maintained a low profile during his two-day desert stop, including a private Feb. 12 fundraiser at The Vintage Club in Indian Wells.

Officials did not reveal who hosted that fundraiser or who attended. But judging from the reports, the guests may have been from out of town or they have a non-desert home as their primary address.

Field Poll: Santorum gaining momentum in California

A new Field Poll of California Republicans shows former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum is “within striking distance” of former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.

The poll, released this morning, shows 25 percent of California Republicans are backing Santorum for president. Romney is preferred by 31 percent of state GOP voters.

“In each of three prior Field Polls measuring California GOP presidential preferences, support for former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum amounted to just one or two percentage points,” today’s report noted.

“However, over the past two weeks the proportion of GOP voters in this state favoring Santorum has been increasing dramatically.”

Rep. Ron Paul got 16 percent of the state GOP vote, while former House Speaker Newt Gingrich trails with just 12 percent.

Another 14 percent of state Republicans are undecided.

Santorum hasn’t done a lot of campaigning in California, since the state primary is not until June 5.

However, he made a surprise visit to the Coachella Valley earlier this month, where he attended a private fundraiser at The Vintage Club in Indian Wells  and a Mass at Sacred Heart Church in Palm Desert.

The GOP presidential candidates will face off in a debate in Arizona today. You can watch it live at 5 p.m. on CNN.

Santorum stumps in the desert

In case you missed it, Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum made an unannounced visit to the Coachella Valley this weekend.

It marks the first time in this campaign cycle that one of the White House contenders has campaigned in the desert.

The former Pennsylvania senator held no rallies and didn’t give any big speeches.

Instead, he attended Saturday’s fundraiser for the Sacred Heart Church and School and went to Sunday Mass at the Palm Desert parish.

During the two-day trip, Santorum also attended a private campaign fundraiser at The Vintage Club in Indian Wells. No details were released.

My colleague, Marcel Honore, was able to catch up with Santorum for an interview published in today’s Desert Sun.

Unlike other presidential campaign appearances, Santorum’s trip to the desert generally remained off of the public radar.

His location was disclosed on Meet The Press during a lengthy TV interview Santorum did from Palm Desert. You can check out the clip here.
