“With more than 180,000 ballots still to be counted around Riverside County, it is premature to consider any election results final,” political director Marc Troast said.
“Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack and her campaign will be awaiting the impact of this large number of remaining ballots before making any further statements on the 36th Congressional District race.”
Earlier this morning — as results showed Democratic challenger Raul Ruiz continued to gain momentum with voters — Bono Mack told The Desert Sun that she expected Ruiz to prevail.
“Historically speaking, he will win,” Bono Mack said around 1 a.m. after the election party had wrapped.
“I suppose it’s too early to say. But historically, the trend would say the numbers will continue to go the way they’re going.”
Ruiz is winning by 4,557 votes, or 2.8 percentage points. Initial returns had shown Bono Mack with a slim lead, but Ruiz erased it as the tallies continued to be in his favor.
