National Journal ranks chances of the 36th turning blue

The National Journal this week put the 36th Congressional District on its list of 75 congressional seats that are most likely to change hands this November.

The publication ranked the local district — where Republican Rep. Mary Bono Mack is challenged by Democrat Raul Ruiz — in the 67th slot.

“Bono Mack’s diverse inland seat has long captured Democratic imaginations, and she only got 52 percent of the vote in 2010,” the National Journal analysis said.

“This year, she’ll have to battle presidential-year Hispanic turnout marshaled by Democrat Raul Ruiz, but the seat got slightly more Republican.”

The 36th — which spans the entire Coachella Valley — is one of 10 California districts to make the list.

To compile the list, the National Journal said officials considered fundraising, public and private polling, previous reporting and “of course, our own gut feelings.”
