Palm Springs Mayor Steve Pougnet on Thursday will finally announce whether he’ll run for reelection and whether he’ll make another run at Congress in 2012.
Thursday’s announcement will be held at 11 a.m. at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Palm Springs.
It could be quite the event. On Facebook and in mass emails, Pougnet has invited his supporters and all local reporters to attend the press conference.
“First, I want to thank you very much for all your wonderful support over the past 8 years, it is appreciated more than you will ever know,” Pougnet wrote on his Facebook page.
“After much thought and consideration with my family, I have made a decision on my future plans.”
Interestingly, Twitter users have dubbed this “The Decision” – the same name of last summer’s hour-long ESPN special where NBA superstar LeBron James announced he was leaving Cleveland and joining the Miami Heat.
The way James handled his announcement – keeping mum until he could spill the beans on national television – caused immediate backlash in Cleveland and left a bitter taste among many sports fans.
Pougnet’s decision clearly doesn’t have the same national draw, though we’ll be curious to see how the community reacts to the way the mayor has handled his own announcement.
Updated Thursday, July 21: Pougnet announced he will run for reelection this fall and will not campaign for congress in 2012.
